Getting Out of The Pigpen

My heart breaks as I think of all the times that I allowed the past to dictate who I was for fear of change. I constantly allowed my past to reenter thinking I could make things better this time. But what truly happened was more death and destruction of my self-esteem, my health and more troubles in my life. On Facebook I saw an It’s My Life Quote that states, “You can’t change what’s going on around you until you start changing what’s going on within you.” I have found this to be so true!

Recently someone dear to me ask me what to do in a particular situation. The issue at hand is a repetitive cycle of the past that is toxic to their life. My thought was this, as long as you continue to allow the past to return you will continue to have trouble. Why do we repetitively allow people and things back into our life that are toxic to us?

**Proverbs 26:11(NIV) As a dog returns to its vomit, so fools repeat their folly.

As adults we are to teach children, protect them and prepare them for their future; unfortunately they don’t always listen to us. The same goes with our walk with God. His Word gives us life and it is an instruction manual for how to live an abundant life; unfortunately we sometimes refuse to listen. We don’t have to go through all the hell that we do here on Earth; however most of the times we bring it on ourselves by the choices we make. We openly invite trouble as we continue to repeat the same mistakes over and over. It’s like returning to the pigpen and wallowing in the mud expecting different results.

**2 Peter 2:22(NIV) Of them the proverbs are true: “A dog returns to its vomit,” and “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”

Things will not be different until we change ourselves. Repetitive behaviors result in a vicious cycle until there is change! Out of loneliness, fear, depression, desperation, etc. we return because it’s familiar. I know all too well for I have been guilty of this. We don’t like stepping out of our comfort zones and straying away from the familiar as change can be terrifying. God has so much more in store for us; if we will only trust and believe Him. If Peter had never of trusted God and stepped out of the boat, he would have never been able to walk on water. Isn’t it time we step out and trust God? He has a wonderful life planned for us!

**Jeremiah 29:11-13(NIV) “For I know the plans I have for you, ”declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you  and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

I have read many times that rejection is Gods protection. But for some reason, when we feel rejected we are more determined than ever to prove our worth to that person. And opening these closed doors only invites repeated troubles. God closes doors for our protection and when we refuse to listen and obey, troubles follow resulting in a repeat of the same ole things from the past. We can’t expect a different outcome until we step out into a different realm. It’s a vicious cycle of repeat until we are willing to change. Same behavior produces same results! Change in behavior only comes by a changed heart and mind. It’s only after surrendering our all to God that He is able to move on our behalf; changing us from the inside out. Therefore, changing our lives by no longer allowing the same ole- same ole.

**Romans 12:2(NIV) Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Just like when you are learning to cook; if you keep repeating the same mistakes you will never get the recipe correct. You must be willing to follow directions thus making the corrections needed to have the perfect recipe. Be brave for God has not given us the spirit of fear. Let’s have life and life more abundantly by stepping out and asking God to help us by renewing our minds and hearts so that we can move forward; not backwards, and get out of the pigpen.

**2 Timothy 1:7(KJV) For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

To God Be All the Glory, Honor and Praise Forevermore!

Much Love To You All,

Donna
